Block mounting
The item being block mounted is wet glued on the MDF block and placed into a vacuum press to remove all the air and thereby provide a perfectly flat mounted piece. The edge of the MDF is finished in black. To finish off the block is then sprayed with a matte finish clear coat lacquer to provide abrasion resistance. This does not provide protection from UV or fading, but does provide very minor abrasion resistance.
The majority of the items we block mount are music posters, movie posters, open edition prints, pop art and digital photographs. These are large and we choose to use 12mm board as this does not easily warp and is easier to handle. We choose not to use thicker MDF as there are significant weight issues to consider and potential hazards to be wary of given the very limited options for securing a hanging point. For MDF blocks of 15 - 25 mm be considered we recommend routing in a hanging device for anything larger than A3 (420mm x 297mm).
No frames or glass are used, making it appealing and suitable for home decor (bedroom, games room, home theatre, general living areas). Ideal for also commercial or business environment to inexpensively display general low cost art or product brochures and information.
It is important to remember that a block mount at the end of the day is still paper stuck on a board that is full of slow release acid materials and not splashproof. Not being glassed, in time block mounts will fade, hence their use is not recommended on collectibles or items of value.
